295/2 The Green, Spratton

The 1897 Jubilee oak tree can be seen, surrounded by a paling fence, on the green, slightly to the right of the line to the front door of one of the cottages. It appears to have a diameter of about 5 inches, which would give it an age of 30 years - but it is not known how big a sapling was planted in 1897. The picture, therefore, may have been taken in the ten years leading up to 1926. The Virginia Creeper on the house at number 13 is just staring to come round to the west facing wall.

295/3 Erskein Cottages, Spratton

'Northbank', 12 Manor Road. Grade II Listing states that it is late 18C, but more likely to be late 1600s or early 1700s (the date stone is unreadable). This is the house on the right with the later addition 'Northbank Cottage' (10 Manor Road) to its left in the picture. Part of Northbank was once a butcher's shop, run by Mr Page. Originally there was a stable block behind 'Northbank' - when this block was demolished, shoe-making equipment was found in the rooms above the stables. Before the Second World War, a large upper room in the house was used as a Young Men's Club - there was a billiard table, shove ha'penny, but strictly no alcohol. When Northbank Cottage was in separate occupation (Dr Tennant lived here 1975 - 1981 and carried out a substantial refurbishment including adding a double garage), its entrance was in School Road, and it probably had a School Road address. The two properties were joined up in the 1990s.

The two remaining Erskine Cottages are on the left. These were reconstructed in 1937, for which purpose a grant was made by the County Council under the Housing (Rural Workers) Acts, 1926 to 1938, which subjected them to maximum rents of 6s. 10d and 7s. 9d respectively for a period of 20 years from the completion of the work.

295/5 Checquer's Inn, Spratton

The house, of brick stone and cob, is known to date back to at least 1630. Fire Insurance plate, number x48618 (missing its first number) is a Sun Fire plate, whose records are held at London Metropolitan Archives at Clerkenwell. The overhang on the north face (a bit of a mystery according to the experts) is found on the old photos back to at least 1902.

In the 19^th century known landlords were William Pearson in 1841, William Pearson Junior in 1881, and Miss Sarah Pearson in 1890. In 1901 it was owned by Northampton Brewery Company (probably bought in 1897 when it was up for sale as reported in Northampton Mercury 19 February 1897), and the landlord at that time was Edward Cheney. NBC was acquired by Phipps in the 1920s. At this time, it was the main pub in the village with Bell Ringers suppers being held there. After Mr Cheney, landlords were Joseph Marlowe in 1910, Albert E Gooden in 1920 and during World War 2, the landlords were Gertie Bannister and Harry Bannister (the cellars were used as air raid shelters). They had three children - Irene, Dora and Cecil. Dora married Ron Lloyd, but she died aged 35. Ron then married Joyce and, when the Chequers was closed in 1955 (due to lack of car parking), they moved to the Kings Head. In the 1970s, the Brooke-Taylor family lived here - nephew Tim is well known as one of the "Goodies".

295/6 School Street, Spratton.

The Red House, built circa 1905, is on the left. The house in the background to the right of this is the schoolmaster's house. In front of it is a beer house, known to have been such from 1891 or earlier when George Thompson Tassell (?) was the beer-seller. In 1910 it was owned by Phipps with William J Roberts running it. Later a Mrs. Dunkley took this on as a beer house, off-licence and shop until about 1930. It was known as 'Dunkleys'.

295/7 Third Turn, Spratton

The junction of Smith Street and High Street. Used for the making of shoes in the 1800's, latterly by Mr Austin and his family. In the 1900's, machine manufacturing took over and home workshops disappeared, although shoe repairing was probably carried on here until the 1950s, when it became a private house.

First Turn (now Holdenby Road) at its junction with Church Road. The house on the left is now Radley House. All but one of the cottages on the right have since been demolished, the nearer ones so that buses could take the turn from Church Road into Holdenby Road.

Church End (now Church Road). This is the view looking north towards the Church. The cottage on the right has since been demolished, and Glebelands built on the land behind the railings.

295/10 Hall Cottages, Spratton

'Hall Cottages' (demolished in the 1940's) in Manor Road looking towards the junction with Smith Street, with Home Farm in the distance. The building end-on, in front of Home Farm, was once the farmhouse associated with Spratton Hall. This collection of buildings can be seen particularly well on map 2136 from 1886, although the 1900 map still shows them. The buildings are still visible in the 1930s, see image 1479. All these buildings were demolished in the 1940s

The cottages belonged to Spratton Hall and originally were built to house the farm workers. They fell into disrepair and were demolished in the 1950s. The entrance to Tommy Wykes' farm (now the factories) is in the left foreground.
