8th May 1995
50th Anniversary of VE Day - Bob Hadnett, war veteran wearing his medals, made a short speech before cutting the ribbon to open the 50th Anniversary fete. His wife, Florence, sits by the gate watching with Olive Barrett behind her.
He was in the Royal Corps of Signals during the war and was awarded the Military Medal, Croix de Guerre and Albert (Belgium) medals for service at Dunkirk. In 1945 he was in a prisoner of war camp in Austria.
After the war a branch of the Royal British Legion was set up in Spratton and Bob ran the Poppy Appeal from the 1950s, when he came to the village, until 1991.
