Harry Hider was born in 1874 in Wellingborough, the son of Samuel Hider, a plasterer, and his wife Ellen.  He married Nellie Dove in Wellingborough in October 1903 and their son, George Henry was born in August 1904.  He moved to Spratton with his family some time after 1911 and they were in Spratton for the 1921 census.

Harry joined the army in 1895 when he was 20 and served in the 3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment in India and South Africa, winning a number of campaign medals. He extended his period of service and was called up immediately war was declared to serve in the 6th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. He was sent to France on 25 July 1915 and was wounded in the fighting on the Western Front.  He was demobbed on 22 February 1919 and awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He died in June 1939 aged 65 and his funeral was held in Spratton.
