Pilot's Certificate No 147 from Royal Aero Club in 1911. Travelled to USA, entering air races & winning several thousands of dollars as well as the Harbour prize in San Francisco. Made in 1912 the first Channel flight with 2 passengers, one of whom was his wife, in Aug 1912 made in a Brequet Biplane. May experiments to prove natural stability of the aeroplane.
Changed his name to Rhodes-Moorhouse 1912 to comply with his grandfather's will.
Commissioned RFC 22 Aug 1914. In charge RFC workshops South Farnborough, then joined No 2 Squadron, No1 Wing in France.
Observation missions with his observer as 2nd Lt W.S (Sholto) Douglas, later to command No 43 Squadron and become Air Vice Marshal, Deputy Chief of Air Staff during Battle of Britain.
Was recommended for promotion to full Lieutenant by Lt.Col Trenchard, commander of No 1 Wing.
First airman to be awarded VC. Citation - "For most conspicious bravery on 26 Apr 1915 in flying to to Courtai and dropping bombs on the railway line near that station. Mortally wounded on the return journey, he succeeded in flying the 35 miles to his destination and reporting successful accomplishment of his journey despite being mortally wounded.
