1875 Pencil with Seven Names, each with the Date August 6th 1875.
We were given this pencil by an ex-member of SLHS who says he came across it when doing decluttering. It is a large commemorative pencil measuring 34cm long and 2.5 cm diameter. At one end is gold lettering with 7 names One wonders whether Marton should Martin and Henlety should be Henley. Alongside each name is the date Aug 6th 1875.
The 7 names are:
Emily G Langham (born c 1846 in Cottesbrooke)
Augusta Frederica Langham (born c 1848 in Cottesbrooke)
Francis "Frank" Nathaniel Langham (born c 1842 in London)
Frederick Henley (born c 1848)
Charles Walmesley
George Marton
Caroline Marton
The 3 Langham siblings were brought up at Cottesbrooke Hall, their father being Herbert Langham, and they were all living there in the 1861 and 1871censuses.
In 1881 Emily (Single) was living in Hove with her uncle Sir I Langham. Frank and Augusta are living at Highgate House, Little Creaton.
On 20 August 1900 Frederic Henley (aged 51 and now a baron, living at 14 Half Moon Street, London) married Augusta Langham (aged 51). Frederic's father is given as Anthony Henley Henley (deceased).
So there is a clear link between 4 of the names: the 3 Langhams and Frederic Henley. I have been unable to track down the other 3 names with any certainty (archivist).
The archivist contacted the Keswick Pencil Museum to see if they could shed any light on its origin. They replied:
The pencil itself MAY have been made in Keswick as they did do things like that back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The factory did make what they called ‘fancy cedar goods’ that would have included those big pencils with names on etc…
If you can shed any more light on this interesting artifact please contact the
archivist.
