Ron Martin of Spratton was the coxwain of a landing craft in the D-Day landings. He was on board LCI(S) 2518. LCI(S) stands for anding Craft Infantry (Small). The first image shows three such craft loaded with commandos, as was Ron's craft.
The second image shows the crew of LCI(S) 2518. Ron Martin is on the front row, third from left.
Ron's landing craft took a direct hit which likked 40 of the commandos on baord. It was beached and abandoned. Ron survived the war and wrote wrote up his experiences for his family.
