Taken in front of the cottage that stood adjacent to what is now 2 Holdenby Road, the one remaining (white) cottage on the north side of the road just above Church Road. The cottage was originally occupied by a lacemaker, and the front room was below street level. On 3 September 1939, the day that World War 2 was declared, Dick (then 3 years and 3 months) and his mother and younger brother were evacuated from Walthamstow and assigned this cottage, in which they remained until after the war, when they moved to Hollowell.
