St Andrew’s Churchyard – Brick Grave
On Friday 19 October 2018 Jim Pye, the maintenance man, was walking round St Andrew’s churchyard to check that all was well with the tombstones etc, when a hole appeared at his feet in the south-east corner of the churchyard. The earth had given way and fallen into a rectangular hole about 4 – 5 feet deep. The cavity appeared to be lined with bricks. Low tunnels appeared to lead off from either end. These would each have accommodated a coffin- sized object.
The hole appeared behind Grave 147 tombstone to three members of the Pearson family buried in 1816, 1820 and 1844. The hole was in front of Grave 150 to another member of the Pearson family buried in 1796. (Grave numbers taken from Memorial Inscriptions at St Andrew Spratton published by the Northamptonshire Family History Society).
The Churchwarden and Vicar were called and, on the advice of the Archdeacon, the hole was filled in.
