1864 Theophilus Gist. An image in the Vandeleur Collection in the photography section of Clare County Library.
Vandeleur Robinson took photos in County Clare, Benares, Uttar Pradesh, County Armagh, Isle of Wight. But mainly he photographed people, and the majority of these were military men.
There is uncertainty as to whether this is the same Theophilus Gist (his name is sometimes spelt Theophillis) that bought Spratton Hall in 1879. He gave notice to the Bosworths who were farming the Spratton Hall land, and is shown in Kelly"s Directory of 1884 as a grazier. William Macnaghton, the 5th Baron Erskine (born 1841) and his wife Lady Alice (born 1844), acquired Spratton Hall in 1890.
So did Theophilus then go to Ireland with his family or is the Vandeleur Collection there for a different reason. Unfortunately Irish census records for 1881 and 1891 were pulped during WW1 so there is no easy way of verifying this.
